Silence descended on the furnace. Metal groaned as it settled in the aftermath of the explosion. Eva feared to move, even to breathe.

It was Janus who made the first move. “Have you seen enough? I think we can leave now. It looks like the place is about to come down around our ears.”

A deep chuckle came from amidst the carnage in front of them. Metal was pushed out of the way as Iuvart, wreathed in shadow, stood. “I don’t know if I should commend you for saving me, or destroy you for ruining lifetimes of preparation.”

“Perhaps I consider you the lesser of two evils,” Eva shot back.

“Oh no, there is no lesser evil. There is only hunger to conquer. You have brought me the key, Eva Ross. You shall not leave this place. It is too late for you.”

Iuvart continued ranting, but Eva's attention was distracted by Madden, who edged up behind her.

“Wind him up.”

“What? Are you insane?” She whispered back without moving her lips.

“Look around. This place is falling apart. One good knock would collapse this furnace on top of him.”

Eva turned back to Iuvart, who waited for the answer to a question he had apparently asked. She put on her most innocent expression, one she knew had irritated Gideon from the first time they had worked together.

“I'm sorry; I don't consider you a threat. I was listening to somebody that matters. You know, somebody important. Somebody who can actually influence what is going on. What was it you said?”

The effect was instant. Released of the confines of Gideon Homes and his controlled emotion, Iuvart flew into a rage. His eyes and hands began to glow, outlining a creature with leathery wings wearing a face of fury. “He is mine! You will give him to me!”

“Now!” Janus yelled, and Eva found herself borne backwards by the two men, the cop following behind, shotgun in hand.

As they made their way towards the tunnel, a beam of heat passed over their heads.

“One of the lines describing Leviathan is 'His breath sets coals ablaze, and flames shoot from his mouth'. You do not want to be there for that.” Janus opened the door.

They descended the steps, and started back down the direction they had come.

“No, wait!” The cop shouted. “This way!”

“The car is at the other end of the tunnel.” Madden shouted back, above the noise of collapsing metal. Clearly, Janus was right.

“Not mine. It is close. Do you want to get out of here alive?”

Heading off any argument, Eva started up the tunnel with the cop. “We can get our stuff if we survive this. Let’s just get the hell out of here!”

Flashlights in hand, they ran maybe a quarter of a mile until the tunnel opened out on a parking lot. The cop urged them into her car. In moments, they had screamed round the dirt track to their rental car, and were grabbing their belongings when the furnace began to warm. Beams of light shot out of the middle as ironwork, unused for decades, glowed a sooty red.
